Tech: MK3 Jetta rear foglight mod

Post by Rennwagen1 »

This is a pretty much step by step account on how to add one or two rear foglights to your Jetta.

You will need:
MK3 Euro headlight switch w/dual fog light positions
About 25 feet of primary wire 16-18 ga. should work fine
Small non-insulated female crimp connectors (.125, I believe)
Wire strippers and crimpers
1 or 2 1156 light bulbs
1" hole saw, or dremel tool
zip ties
Trim removal tools(panel popper)
Phillips screwdriver
Pliers

The removal of the factory headlight switch is pretty easy, you will need to pry off the trim panel to the left of the switch with the ABS warning light on it. When that is gone, stick you finger in the hole and feel for the tabs that hold in the h/l switch. push the tab toward the switch while pulling out on it. The switch should then pop out.

You will need to connect the wire you are going to run to the back of the car to pin 12 on the h/l wiring harness on the car side of the connection. crimp one of the female connectors to the wire and insert it into the hole in pin 12. I also zip tied the wire to the wire next to it, just to hold it in place. Pull the wire through the hole down to the kickpanel and install the euro switch and put the ABS light panel back in.

I have left out the pics for this step, as everyone will do this thier own way. You must run the wire from the headlight switch to the rear right(passenger) side of the trunk. You will need to remove the carpet from that side of the trunk also to get the wire to the grommet. You will also need to remove the carpet from the trunklid. There are 8 clips you can remove with either your fingers, or pliers. The rest of the clips need to be taken out with a phillips screwdriver and a panel popper.

The wire will need to be pushed through the grommet on the body. I think I used some WD-40 or something to help it through.

You then run the wire along the existing wiring and through the grommet on the trunklid. I ziptied it in a few places to keep it safe when the trunk opens and closes.

You will now need to take the bulb trays out of the inner taillights on the trunk lid. There is just a small tab to release them. You will see on the light mounted to the trunklid, there is a hole where the reverse bulb goes. Just below it there is a spot where the rear fog bulb should go, but is not cut out. Cut that out with a 1" hole saw or dremel tool. YOu will want to remove the taillight piece and set it on a bench or something. That will make it a bunch easier. Make sure you do not go too far through when the bit breaks through, you don't want to break you lens. You can see the clear hole, and the red hole is what needs to be cut out. Do this to both sides if you are doing both lights.

You can see here that the bulb tray already had the hole in it for the rear fog, this is because it is required by law in europe. Install an 1156 single filament turn signal bulb in the lower slot.

Now for the wiring. Run the wire up to the wiring harness that goes to the drivers side bulb tray. You will need to crimp another female connector to the end of the wire and get it to stay in the connector in the number 3 position. It is the larger black wire in these pics.

If you are doing both rear foglights, you can duplicate this on the passenger side. Just splice the wire and install the wiring the same on that side. On the passenger side, I used a white wire for some reason.

Put the whole thing back together, and pull the light switch out untill both foglight LEDs light up, and go check the back. It should look like this!
