So it would be the AWW engine? I would still like to know more about the "block damage".

That could be turned into a nice 4dr 1.8T very easily.....
As far as this "bad block" is concerned, I would just plan on replacing the complete short block.
Step 1 remove head
Step 2 remove trans
step 3 throw away short block
Step 4 grab new short block
Reinstallation is the reverse of removal.

I think there needs to be way more info posted about the exact engine problems. Just saying a block is bad doesn't say much at all. Usually if the block is bad something internal along with it is mangled metal inside.
What mechanic/shop looked at it?

I see what you're saying. Like I posted earlier, I put this up for a friend that doesn't have the internet. I'm trying to get a hold of him. I'll find out the mechanics name, and what the exact problem was with it.
To be honest, I know little about how VW's are constructed. I deal more in the jap-crap myself.
The Engine is the AWW. I do know that much from trying to find a replacement for him online.
News Flash!!!:
Just got a hold of him. He said that the crank broke and fell in the oil pan???...
The mechanic was just a friend of his in the Bozeman area.
He also told me to check on here to see if anyone was maybe selling the AWW engine, which I'll take a look around and see if I find anything.
Hopefully some of this helps...
