I started with a socket set similiar to this this 53 pc. set

Or this 83 pc. set from craftsman and it's still my most used set.

I did a ton of work with nothing but this set. Then I got a set of wrenches in standard and metric and it grew from there. I'd pay the extra $10 and get the 83 pc. But you can do a lot with that and some other basics like a pliars and cresent wrench.

Thanks Ramrod, I think I'll check out the 83 piece set. That is a good price.
