Got most of the engine assembled. Found out that one of my rocker arms was cracked so I have a new set on order.
Also got the transaxle soaking in degreaser. Tomorrow I will spray it down and get it cleaned up.

So started to work on the transaxle. Just had some leaky seals so I figure replace them all.

When I pulled the diff out these retaining clips were just sitting on inside of the shaft against the bearing loose and this was on both sides. Any ideas on why they would be there?

Oh by the way is there a trick to get the pinion nut off or do I really have to buy the $100 318/14 tool?

Uh oh Wade, you opened Pandora's box...and I'm the bearer of bad news.
Probably should have just replaced the nosecone seals and been done with it. You need the special too for the R&P, and more to get a bearing pressed and set to spec, plus others to set the shift forks, diff preload etc. Those tools are all expensive and hard to find, an definitely not available in Billings, so I would leave this to the pros.
A place called Rancho is known to sell and rebuild VW transaxles
http://ranchotransaxles.com and you can buy a rebuilt IRS T1 trans for $600, with a 2 year warranty, with a good core. So I would stop now, and get it back together and call Rancho.

Not to worried about the shift forks and what my. Im going to leave that all assembled. Just need to get the pinion nut off so I can reach the seal. Other than that the transaxle looked pretty good with not very much play in the gears.

Gotcha, you could use a screwdriver or chisel on the pinion retainer ring. Can you replace the seal without removing the shaft?

From what I have watched the whole assembly pulls out and you can replace the seal.
