Shifter issues:
Image
B5S4 shifter assembly by ryan8701, on Flickr

1. Bolt 38A keeps backing off the threaded shaft on the transmission. The dealership believes that it’s due to a change in the angles of either the linkage or the transmission due to the new drive train stabilizer or transmission mounts. Their best guess is to replace the entire linkage including shifter assembly in the shift bucket and all the arms to the transmission. I think this is too much money to spend on a best guess.

2. The symptoms were a grinding of 2nd gear when shifting 1-2 above 2000 rpm. Shifts from 3-2 or 1-2 below 2000 rpm where a bit notchy but no grinding of 2nd gear occurred. All other shifts were smooth, and there was no clutch slippage starting in 4th, 5th, or 6th. I adjusted the shift linkage within the shifter box according to my Bentley and it made only minimal improvements. The grinding issues was unchanged. After an evening of driving and a few pulls down the onramp, shifting became very difficult. 1st and 2nd were almost impossible to get into and I had to start in 3rd to get home. At this point I took it back to the dealership and where they found that bolt 38A had backed off again. An issue they had when they first drove the car after they put it back together. At that point previously they replaced the parts circled: 38A, 38, and 53 because the bushing had failed. I had a short shifter on the car, but changed it back to the original stock shifter about a year ago. I had no shifting issues prior to the timing belt failure and it being repaired.

3. If the new drive train stabilizer or transmission mounts didn’t change the position of the transmission. I’m wondering if one of the linkage arms got bent somehow?

I could see the linkage getting bent if the trans were dropped without disconnecting it from the trans first, but even then the linkage is stout.

you may be getting more vibration with uprated mounts, or they may have bent it by lifting the engine or trans at some point, if not to difficult, to get it out, purchase #33 and compare it side by side to the original, obvious shape changes should net you a free part, and the solution to your problem.

my problem was that i removed the nut that runs across the top of the tranny(which i found out is NEVER supposed to be removed) it was fine, at first, but after driving for about ten minutes i lost all shifting ability due to the fact that the nut had come off. my shifting was never hard and i didnt grind. what shift kit did you use? and what components did you upgrade?
