I am the owner of a 96 GTI with a 2.0 L engine. This is my first car and I want to get a chip for it, but don't know where to start. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for me.

uhm... hmm....

You will probably only gain a couple hp from a chip on that engine...

oh. from what I have read chip usually add between like 10 and 40 hp. but then again that was probably just to sell their product. What else would you recommend I do? Like I said in my first post this is my first car, so I am pretty inexperienced with modifying cars.

Well, you can get a GIAC and that will probably get you ~5hp if you are lucky. Also, you would have to use 91+ Octane.

I would do an engine swap... to like a vr6 or something...

But seriously, maybe like a Cold air intake, and exhaust?

Yeah I have been looking at a magnaflow exhaust, and cold air intakes. I have thought of doing an engine swap to a vr6, but why not just sell my car and get a vr6.

The only engines that get really good gains from chips are the turbos and they didn't put the in until the Mk IV and V. Like he said intake and exhaust are your best options for a NA engine.

Chips on the 2.0 make very few HP. While all modifications work together, the chip is usually the icing on the cake. I would start with a complete tune up to make sure that everything is working tip-top, and then I would go with intake and exhaust. I would probably chip it then, and start looking at cams and cam gears and some other not so bolt-on mods that will gain you HP. I have some experience with the mk3 2.0, so if you have more questions, post up or PM me.

Shameless plug for me! I can also get you most of the parts that you would be wanting, I am a Magnaflow and Autotech dealer, and can source most anything else. ;)
