WOW - how did you end up cleaning that up? Carbon is a biatch to remove...I just scraped the crap out of the exhaust ports on my F250 and that's not Diesel either.

I wish that was just carbon. That is a mixture of Diesel Soot and Motor Oil. The soot comes from the EGR and the Oil comes from mist from the Crank Case Ventilation system. They come together in the intake to form a slimy, nasty, gets on everything-can't get off of anything mess!
I'm in the process of soaking it in a Condenser Coil cleaner (safe for aluminum) that has Sodium Hydroxide in it (Lye "This is ... a chemical burn." Tyler Durden). After it's done soaking I'm going to blast it with a pressure washer. The EGR I'm going to have to clean by hand because of the plastic parts.
I've packed wheel bearings, I've changed seals on leaking transmissions and transfer cases, etc etc. This is by far the nastiest crap I have ever dealt with. I'm definitely going to take some preventative measures to make sure I don't ever have to do it again.

buy a tub of laquer thinner or mineral spirits and let it soak for a couple days if permissable, it will be clean as a whistle when it comes out, the vw techs do that at the dealer ive seen it strip that shit clean no scrubbing at all! good luck

nice, i bet my EGR could give yours a run for its money. a great way to fill your weekend.
might be able to help you reprogram the egr to blow that junk out the tailpipe where it belongs and prevent future fun cleanings...
