If you go 1.8T you want 2002 or newer, that is when they went to 180hp, and the 24V Vr is like 201 I think, so I would go with that also, but it al depends on what they are asking for them. Personally(and as a VR6 owner) I would go with a 1.8T as the tuning possiblilties are endless....

Renn makes a good point. Depends what your plan with for the car is. If modding and tuning are what you really want to do, the 1.8T has more potential for gains.
On the other hand, if your going to pretty much drive it as is, the VR makes more power out of the box, and the delivery is much more usable than the turbo. Having driven both, I prefer the instant response of a VR6.

I agree with Joe also, I mean, don't get me wrong, I love my VR6, nothing sounds like a strung out VR with intake and exhaust screaming up a pass. Nothing. BUT you reach a point of dimishing returns on a VR very quickly. As much as I love my VR, I am pretty sure that my next "project" will be a 1.8T. Again, Joe has it right;
Heavy tuning: 1.8T
Not so much Tuning:VR6
Choose wisely.

I would also agree with both joe and aeron, i have a 1.8t and i absolutely love it, but i would rather a VR6 since i am not planning on going crazy on the mods, having instant power without having to wait for the turbo (very short time i know) is really nice. but, i like the fuel economy which, if i am correct(not sure), is a little better on the 1.8 i think, either one thats within your price range would be a good way to go.
i do have mine chipped, so id imagine i would be able to keep with a VR6 and if your worried about the extra 20 hp the VR6 has, the chip was a great way to nearly match that.

Mileage is another great point. I also believe the 1.8T is going to get better mileage, if you stay out of the boost. Boost = Fuel use. I get about 28.5 in my VR6 on the highway, and it would be better I think if I was not chipped, as it runs a little rich, but the power and driveablilty is well worth it. I have heard of the 1.8Ts getting upwards of 40 mpg if they are driven nicely.

I get ~32mpg on the highway at 75MPH(4000rpms). With my new 5th gear I'm hoping to see 35+mpg highway.

I have driven both and I love my VR, and 1.8 do get better gas mileage. Mine varies.
