John, the MK3 GTI orignally came with the 2.0L ABA motor, and the VR6 motor. When they put a 6 in the GTI is raised a big stink in the VW community because the GTIs had always been a 4 cyl hatchback, and now they were diluting the breed with this new VR6. Most true GTI "aficionados" never accepted the VR6 in the car, but were extremely happy when the 1.8Ts came available in the MK4 and then finally the 2.0T in the MK5. Finally a 4 cylinder with 6 cylinder performance, but with 4 vyl fuel efficiency.
