Wanted- Experienced Air-Cooled Volkswagen (VW) mechanic. I live near Bozeman (Livingston) and have a nice 73 Thing that needs some work. I’m looking for an experienced mechanic who has worked on lot of air cooled VWs. The car needs a front suspension rebuild, electrical work (wiper motor, warning lights), new axel boots, brake bleeder nipple replaced, carb rebuild (Solex) and a general tune up. There will likely be additional items added (I just bought the car in AZ). I have the aptitude, but not the time. Please email me at paradisepeaks@msn.com if you can fit the work into your schedule. Thanks!

Thanks Brent, but please don't x-post - choose one forum and keep it there. This forum will get the most exposure, but if you want it moved just let me know. Welcome to the site, and I think you are the first Thing owner! Post some more pictures of it!

Hey Bdub, it's a type 181 holmes, more commonly called a "Kurierwagen".
Not a "Kübelwagen," which is a type 82.

A guy named Drake down the road from me has two, in 5/5 restored condition.
And there's a couple up by campus that have one.
Oh and actually my old boss in Whitehall has two as well. So I know of 5, 181's around here.

Attempting to answer the OP's question... ;)

I send all people to Autoworks at Four Corners in Bozeman, because they are the best.
If you want see your car sit along east main for a couple years, take it to Auto Stop.
I have heard Straightaway, on Mendenhall, is good too, but no personal experience.

Either way, I'd get a quote of some sort, what you listed sounds like a fair amount of work.

I was just referring him to Autoworks in an e-mail actually haha.
I'm not down with Auto-Stop anymore.
They charged a friend $290 to replace a MK2 radiator fan switch!!!
