Samco Hoses

If you have Samco hoses does your engine bay reek of coolant? After installing mine I always noticed the smell of coolant from outside the car, even when cold and even more so when hot.

The car doesn't leak any coolant and the level doesn't drop at all.

What I'm thinking is the hoses are sort of porous maybe? Aeron has the same problem with his Samco hoses and he has the coolant smell too, and no leaks or loss.

I smell coolant as well. I think I have a bad cap on my expansion tank, maybe not. That coolant smell has been driving me crazy. Weird

Aeron and I are almost sure it has to be caused by the hoses. I have a brand new cap and tank, and I still get the smell.

I think it's the smell that G11 or G12 has - both my VW and Audi have the same smell and it's usually after running at normal temps for a while, but I have no leaks or seeping flanges (lol). The coolant smell was really bad on my Jetta when I had a coolant flange leak, but that thing is solid now and it doesn't leak a drop, but it still has that "hot coolant" smell. Not being familiar with the VR cooling system, but I know it's pretty complex, I would imagine there are more points where coolant could seep or be exposed and give off the coolant smell as is dries up.

I'm no scientist, but I would imagine that natural rubber is more porous than silicone rubber?

yeah, Spence and I were talking about this this wwkend. I think it is the hoses. I have no leaks in my system either(that I know of, but I am 99.5% sure) and I get it all the time. I have even washed my engine bay like twice since the last "coolant leak of 08" and there are no tell tale signs of leaks, other than the smell.

I have been replacing everything looking for the smell. The only things I haven't replaced are the heater core, the expansion tank and radiator itself. I guess I will stop now.
