Are these your keys?
Serious though it could be a lot of things. Coil/coil ground, fuel pump, relay(s). Good place to start is the ignition switch.

My '89 Jetta was doing the exact same thing for about a year. I had absolutely no piece of mind driving it! Finally it quit and wouldn't start up again. I took it to a local shop because I couldn't figure it out, and it was a ground wire in the distributor. -It could also be the ground outside of the distributor. Make sure there is good contact there.
-Another thing, is the plugin to your ECU under the cowl. One time mine had a weird little piece of rubber foam wedged in there blocking a couple of pins. Unplug that and check it and re plug it back in. It's amazing how sensitive these electrical systems can be.
-After I did all of this it has never shut off on me or broken down.
Hope this helps

Pull a spark plug and figure out which is missing: fire or fuel. If fire is missing, plug will be wet. If fuel is missing then plug will be dry. Once you have that basic information you can better focus your efforts on finding the problem.
