I hate my car...

P0606, P0351, P0352, P0353, P0354 and P1296.

ECU, cylinders 1-4 and some engine temp thing.

Thought/hoped it was my battery supplying dirty power to the ECU...i had a crappy battery cable connection. Fixed that with a new cable. Battery and alternator check out fine. Just replaced the plugs and wire harness and coolant temp sensor.

Anything else I can check? Advise on replacing an ECU? Preferably not a new one. Don't have that kind of $. 2001 jetta 2.0 w/ AVH engine.

Car seems to run just fine...but obviously it wants me to ghost ride it off a cliff.

I would check out the engine harness and make sure you have continuity with all the grounds in the system. See if you can scrape up a wiring diagram for the MKIV.

Which cable did you replace...ground or power?

Beef up your grounds. Add extras from chassis to tranny and from battery to tranny maybe?

I replaced the positive battery cable. I'll check out all the grounds etc.

How does once definitively diagnose a dead/dying ecu? Vag-com, I suppose?

P0606 is a strange one...some kind of internal error on a self check maybe? Have you pulled your ECU box open? I would hope it's water tight.

The only real way to diagnose a faulty ECU is to replace or re-flash it and see if the codes go away - there's no real way to test it via VCDS that I know of. You may be able to have it flashed at the dealership, although they would say replace it. You may be able to get a used one, and have it programmed to your cluster and keys, but that would cost a bit. Alternatively, there may be someone out there that can remove the IMMO on a used 2.0 ECU, and you should be able to plug it in and test without programming.

This might be something you take to the dealership and see what they tell you about a re-flash, or a possible TSB on the issue.

I found one TSB regarding the issue, check grounds, battery, alt. ad fuses..I've checked everything but the grounds...which I'll do ASAP.

Cleaned all the ground contacts. Found no broken, melted or otherwise questionable grounds. Pulled the ECU, it's never been opened (by me anyway) and appears to be watertight. (no obvious external signs). Got a VCDS scan...here's what it puked out....speaking of puke...

Oh, and the re-routing of the coil ground has been done already. Not by me, but previous owner had dealer do it.

Ok, here's something to try...at your own risk. I found this obscure reference to your ECU problem on the vortex, and in my tech savvy mind, I can see how it would make sense, because I do it to routers quite often:

http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.p ... ssor-Fault

On your other misfire issue, I think your need to find the TSB or take it to the dealership and have the work done. Edit, I see your reply, have you visually verified the coil ground goes to the ground under the battery tray, and inspected the wire from the coil all the way to the connector?

http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.p ... ng-me-nuts!!!!!

Did you get the green top H20 sensor, and have you thought about your thermostat being bad?

And on that 02 sensor error, you may have bad wiring, or the sensor is bad.

I would start with the ECU, default it, clear codes and see what comes back.

Nice find. Thanks.
Soooo at my own risk, I tried to default the ECU...
Everything goes as planned until the adaptation of the TB...ERROR!

Here is the code that vomits back in my face.

17972 - Throttle Actuator (J338): Under-Voltage during Basic Setting
P1564 - 35-00 - -

Hmm...Battery and Alternator very recently tested fine.

So now all I could do was let the key sit in the on position for about 3 min. to do a "ghetto" adapt..(just cause) Start the car and drive away...Hoping to bring the battery up a bit and then try the default again.

EPC light is on as well as CEL..Car runs fine.

drive around for 10 min or so. Then try again..get to the same point and almost almost...yeah right. Error on the TB adapt.

Either a bad or just plain filthy TB or bad ground for it? When I checked the Coilpack ground (Which was to TSB specs.) the ground post it was connected to had 2 other grounds on it as well...much thicker brown wires. They appeared to be fine, but this is really the only thing I loosened and fiddled with before this NEW issue.

I read that there are supposedly temp requirements for this (coolant and air) it snowed here (utah) today so needless to say it was pretty cold out when I tried this. I figured my drive around the hood would rectify that...just looking for excuses now..i suppose.

Anyway, Thanks for the insight and help thus far. If I can get this sorted out, with your help, I'll have to buy a few rounds of killer Utah brews....oh wait. :screwy:
