Picked up another project vehicle! This one is a 2001 Allroad, with a bad transmission and/or torque converter. 2.7 twin turbo, 250 BHP, Quattro.

UPDATE on 8/9/2016:

Failed trans, so this is now going to be 6MT swapped.
  • C5 A6 01E 6 sp. transmission
    transmission mounting plate
  • C5 A6 front axles
  • C5 A6 manual trans drive shaft
  • C5 A6 manual rear diff
  • C5 A6 manual pedal cluster w/ clutch switch
  • C5 A6 master cylinder
  • C5 A6 slave cylinder
  • Clutch and flywheel
  • shifter linkage
  • shifter
  • shifter boot
  • shifter ball
  • clutch fluid supply hose (2 pcs + elbow)
  • Master cly. -> slave cly. hard line
Being that it has 143k, the TC has probably already been replaced, so I may have rolled the dice on this one. Either way, it's worth the price I paid for it. I'll get it up and driveable again and enjoy being in an Audi once again

Exterior is clean, but of tow truck damage to the front and rear bumpers and diffusers

This is about where I started to tear into it. I have my mind set to pull the motor and trans all in one unit, and separate and fix whatever is wrong.

Image

Air suspension had been replaced with Arnott's air solution of using Bilstein struts and shocks

Image

Image

This is where it's kicking my ass. I can't get the motor out, most likely because the cats are hanging up on the subframe, and I can't get them to get up and over, and I don't think I want to remove the downpipes.

Image

I'm currently rethinking my strategy. Not wanitng to drop the subframe, I think I'll get the motor back in and pull the trans separtaly like I did with my A4.

OR

Maybe I'll go ahead and pull the downpipes and get the everything out. I'm already balls deep in it

Wicked awesome! I love allroads. A 4.2 is high on my list but I would take a 2.7 anyday.

Thanks guys, should be a fun ride when it's all said and done.

This Allroad is a tough one, I eventually won the battle, but it was a drag out fight to get that transmission out.

Thanks to Wade having a Bentley and coming over to help out, I finally got this out and ready for R&R.

I was hit with a PO shop repair where the shop had put in an extra bolt and nut where they should not have, specifically this was an engine/trans bolt. Since it was not coming out with socket or impact, and there was no way to get to it from the back side, I ended up having to Dremel, air chisel, and finally angle grinder with a cutting wheel the nut and bolt. Then I was able to separate the two.

Image

It appears this transmission has already been replaced. However, the torque converter probably has not. So, it needs a new TC seal, and a new TC, which should show up later this week

Image

Here you can see where it's leaking from the TC input shaft

Thought I could use my A4 TC, but it's a different model. So I'll be getting one from somewhere.

I also found some repair bills from Mountain Imports in Missoula. So, it made it's way from a dealership in Van Nuys (LA), CA all the way up here to Missoula where it had a few things done like timing belt etc. and new steering rack. It's nice to have some sort of maintenance history! Although I would like to smack the tech who added that extra trans bolt :banghead:

Haha, I'm ok with extra, just put it in a place the next guy can get to without needing to get out the heavy tools :)

check the trans code, if you end up needing one i know of one with 56k on it and a TC, came off of a 2.7t may be of some use to ya.

What year Allroad is it out of?

This on is a ZF 5HP-19, trans code is an EYK.

I'm pretty certain the trans OK, but was ran low on fluid so the possibility is higher that it may be damaged. Apparently almost all the TC's in the 2001-2002 Allroads eventually fail, and there's an updated TC with an updated and better seal available.

Just out of curiosity, I'm looking at $300 for a TC. If the trans code it matches up, and I could pick it up cheap enough, I may consider picking it up.

this one is code FAQ its from a 2001 S4 worth a shot! usually when the TC shits the bed it sends bad shit through the clutch packs in the trans.... could be problematic for ya :/ this one came out of a swap to a manual trans. it drove from houston to bozeman no hiccups, but dont know if you could do any swapping, im guessing the diff is a different ratio.

Is that a 5 or six speed tip?

Seems like it may work. I don't see the Allroad on the chart, but the 2.7T Wagon/Sedan compatibility looks OK. What happens with the TCU if it sees a different trans code? Gear ratios different?
