So picked up a new project a few weeks ago. 01 Audi TT 225 Quattro 6 speed manual. I was told the owner and his some were going to replace the water pump and never finished the job.
Well today I finally dug into it. This by far is the worst water pump that I have ever removed from a VW/Audi vehicle. Do you notice what is wrong with the old Vs new pump?
I did finish up the water pump and timing kit today.
The next step will be to pull the plugs and do a compression test. If all is good, then I will replace the chain tensioner also.
There will be engine mods and tuning to come. Should be a fun build.
By the way if anyone has a spare 1.8t 225 engine code AMU lying around please let me know.

Really nice, I bet it will really look good when it's cleaned up. Was that old one even the correct water pump? Maybe it's the angle but the overall size looks a bit smaller than the new one.

It seemed to be the same size. It must be the angle that makes it look a little off.

Well here’s the update. I pulled the valve cover and intake cam. Then installed the new cam chain tensioner. Cleaned the valve cover and installed it. Pulled the plugs for a compression test. Short story is that all 4 cylinders have 0 compression.
My assumption is that when the coolant pump failed it took out the timing belt and pooched the valves. So does anyone have an Audi AMU head laying around they don’t need.

Bummer on the head..... You come up with a plan yet? 3.6VR swap?

I’ve been a tad busy lately, so I haven’t touched it since the compression test. I don’t think I’ll do a VR swap. I’d have to source way to much in parts. The 1.8t has more potential for power anyway. But for now I’m on the fence on whether I should build it or sell it. I’ll be on the road to San Diego this weekend, so I’ll have plenty of time to think it over.

Well scoped the cylinders this morning. Definitely has bent valves. The good news is I found a super clean remanufactured head with super low miles for $150. Hopefully next weekend it’ll be running.
