Is there something special with the B5 and the mount? Or did you get new mounts?

No, nothing special. I've just had this odd, "clunking" now for several months that's progressively gotten worse. I'm suspecting it's the tranny mount. I don't know the best way to test it short of a crowbar on a lift.

(and it's a B6 ;)

try and shake the engine, see how much it moves...

or.. open the hood, put it in gear, and hit the brake and gas at the same time, see if the engine tries to jump out. :p or clunks when you tap the gas.

It clunks when I stop, start (I can directly affect the clunking with braking), going over bumps and occasionally shifting.

could very well be a trans or motor mount.

Yeah, I'm wondering if it's the driver's side motor mount. I've started to notice a real light belt-chirping occasionally depending on the angle the car's at...

I got lucky last night and it the symptons were evident in a place I was able to check so I did and I'm 99.9% sure it's one of my motor mounts. I'm going to try and check on Sunday to see if it's broken or merely loose. If it is broken, I'm going to pick an 034 Motorsports Street (10% stiffer than RS4) mount for it while I'm in Denver.
