Door Handles

Question,
On my GLI I have the chinese door handles and they feel really chinsy, they are not tight when I open the door I have to yank on the handle, i'm just not happy. However before I shaved the handles on my Wolfsburg, I had the factory handles and where the latch to open the door was located (behind the handle) they would always freeze and break so I don't really like those either. Is there another handle that will work on my GLI? Do the mkIII handles work, is there a lot of modification to get them to work? And if I were able to put mkIII handles on is there a way to wire in the keyless entry like the MKIIIs had or is that not possible. Does anyone know?

You best bet is to find a set of Mk2 handles, and make sure that they are working well. Take the levers apart, clean and lube everything up, and put them back on, and make sure that everything is tight. YOu should hopefully not need to do the "mk2 opening" where you pull the handle and pushin the door and then pull it open. THe handles come apart pretty easily, and it is a pretty cheap fix.

Cool thanks, do the chinese and mkIII handles come off like the factory mkii handles? I'll have to look at them in the morn. The mkIIs were easy you just pulled the cover off and remove screws and pull them out. There must be screws some where on the MKIII and chinese handles. When I get the mkIII handles and after I clean them, do they just fit on the door right, I won't have to pull the tumbler out will I? How will my current keys work?

I'm familier with the mk2 opening and I'm looking forward to not have to do that. I'll check the classifieds to see if I can get a pair. What other handles will work? Models? i'd like to use the Porsche handles but I can't afford them right now.
Aeron, will the keyless entry thing work where I'd install a VW remote, and be able to lock it from outside the car. I'd love to have keyless entry. This is probably a huge wiring task isn't it?

wait, wait, wait. I am sorry I am an idiot. I meant to tell you to get a set of mk2 handles, and I pushed the wrong number. The mk 3 handles wond worl without a lot of modification IIRC. I will change the original post. Sorry
P.S. you can do keyless, but you will have to add an actuator to each door. Not too difficult, but very time consuming. YOu can then use any keyless entry out there.

Cool thanks Aeron, I'll look for a set of MKII handles. They are pretty easy to clean and lube. What kind of lube should I use? My key would not work would it?

Hey Aeron, I was looking at those door handles today, and I can't figure them out, how do I get them off my doors, they don't seem to have a cover. Do you remove them from the inside? Just wondering.

There should be a set screw just inside the door skin, and you may have to pop the outer cover plate off and take a screw out from the front also. Minus those two screws, they should just fall out of the doors.

Cool thanks. As soon as I can find a set of MKII handles, I think I'll try them.
