Death by Gummie Bear...

Post by Road Blitz »

So one of the main reasons I got a good deal on my car was that the passenger side power seat no longer moved forward or backward (or really any direction for that matter). To make matters worse the seat was stuck in a rather uncomfortable position as your legs were practically kissing the dashboard.

Since I had some tools and I know nothing about VW's I decided I'd just take this seat off myself and determine what the problem was. After I figured out how to actually take the seat off (Took off the biggest bolts I could find close to the floor) I quickly discovered the cause of the seat problem. Someone decided to do the ol Gummie Bear mod to the seat rail in order to give it that custom feel. :banghead: I still wasn't sure if they also decided to destroy the seat motor trying to move it, but luckily once the bear was gone it worked again! Of course the the rest of the seat is still not working. Worse I know that one of the motions will work if you use a connector from a different switch, so its not the motor (electrical is not my specialty, not good when owning a VW i know...).

Now comes my first (but not last) stupid question. If I swap these seats out for some manual VW ones (with an air bag) will I encounter any problems with connectors/warning lights/air bags to the face? I'm just wondering if this would be more hassle then it's worth. Another option would be to disable the seat air bags and just grab manual seats, but I haven't a clue how to do that without a light going off...

Thanks

I have seen a DIY on vwvortex for removing a seat and putting a resistor in to stop the Airbag light from popping up. I will do a quick search and see if I can find it. I think it was under the Aftermarket Seat Installation DIY.

It's a 2001 Jetta GLX. Yeah this multiple airbag trend can be annoying (until i get into a wreck). I know they're there for safety, but I swear my GTI has airbags that come out of the cupholders there's so many...

Those german engineers think of everything!

I found the DIY (sort of) on Vortex that lists the type of resistor I would need to use, so I can figure the rest out on my own i'm pretty sure (look for the "crap I blew my airbags" thread in the future).

Man I really need one of those manuals now...
