Update 9-16-08

Did some more work on the GTI today....

Battery tray delete....

Image

Still have to smooth things out and fill holes but I primered it so da rust stays away!

Image

Started grinding out what rust I did find in the window frame....

Image

I also noticed that since I pulled the doors and such that the bare metal roll cage has started surface rusting so I figured i'd start to prep it for paint and decide what color I wanted to paint it. Just etch priming it here....

Image

Got the rear windows out with help from Josh as well! Thanks a ton Josh! Literally took like 1 minute per side to pop out! Thanks for the advice Stoney and Kevin on getting those suckers outta there.!

Image

I also got the rear hatch off and pulled the rear tails out along with the last of the wiring harness for them.....

Image

All the glass out and finally getting to barebones body....

Image

Good glass all around other than windshield. I'd like to track down a defrosterless rear.

Image

Pulled the headliner out in mint shape......

Image

I painted the one part of the cage a metallic gunmetal grey. I think I am going to stick with that for the cage and paint the rest possibly tomorrow. What do you guys think of that color?

Image

Image

I still don't know about the rear apron yet. It's pretty far from straight but I honestly don't know if I am up for putting a new one in. It looks like a ton of work!

Image

Image

Image

The rear inside is clean as could be though!!!

Image

Test fitting the MKII dash......

Image

Image

Image

I am going to have to do some cutting of the original brackets for this to slide in all the way but the actual dash is already modded for a MKI. Thanks again Aeron for sourcing that baby out for me!

Image

And as always I finish my update with "as it sits" right now in the garage!

Image

I  my VW

Lots o progress
I like the Grey paint... was thinking about a silver grey myself...?
Does the hatch close and line-up with the frame around that rear apron?
Hope it's not bent and you can work with the bottom section.
Body work is just not my thing. But this build is showing me possibilities.
Good thing you are ahead of me on the body work.

I know you can, the hardest part is getting the old one out without tearing up the rear quarters where it's spot welded. Some of the angles that the spot welds are in would be extremely hard to drill out properly.

Yeah the hatch is fine which is why I am leaning more towards just trying to straighten out what I have rather than swap aprons.

Oh yeah, when looking at the color I chose for the cage, keep in mind the rest of the car will be painted a matte black :unibrow:

Have you divulged information about the car, I can't remember. Are you racing this car, or having it as a fast daily?
