CoilPacks Dying at an alarming rate

Post by Dubber »

Hello!!
My 1.8t blew another coilpack yesterday. This is my 6th or 7th one..
Anyone have any idea as to what is causing these to blow all of the time??

My mechanic had me put in Autolite plugs last time - I think i am going to go back to pure stock - Or do you think there is a better one to go for?
I do have the car chipped so having a more reliable coilpack is neccessary.

I would go back to the factory plugs, and possibly factory coilpacks? They might be more expensive, but if the don't go bad, there you go.

Make sure to get the revised version of the coilpack if you are not already. OEM are a revision "E" for engine code AWD or a revision "R" if you have engine code AWW or AWP. Like Aeron said change your plugs too, and get NGK coppers, single electrode, stock heat range - they should be like $2.50 EACH. And get a plug gap tool and make sure to check and set the gap before you put them in.

You can get singles or a 4 pack of CP's from ECS tuning.

Actually after reading some stuff on NGK's site HERE I think you may want to pony up for the cost of some Iridium plugs. It sounds like they have a reduced voltage requirement and more durability and are recommended for turbocharged cars. The coppers do have a copper core but are wrapped in a nickel alloy.

I think the reason your CP's are failing is because of heat caused by increased cylinder pressure and that just works it's way up the like to your CP's. FWIW I could tell you had a failing/misfiring CP because every time you would drive off, your car sounded like a Subaru :)

Ya man, just go over to Dana or you could try the BIG Napa on Southgate drive.

Dunno that dude, you'll need to take charge to make sure you get the right ones. Find your engine code and get the right CP's, then go to Napa and get the Iridiums. Change them out. Profit.

You may try a 1 step colder plug - it will reduce the temps on your CP's and probably help. If you try that just run them for a few hundred miles and see how they are holding up - if they are fouling you should stick with the stock heat range.
