65k maintenance?

Post by paintballguy424 »

Just rolled the Jetta over the 65k mark (1.8t btw). Was wondering what kind of prevenative/recommended work is around this time. Was reading about doing the timing belt with water pump etc. Is there anything else on the list or would be benifietial at this time possibly why I have it torn apart? Also I'm getting a PO411 Secondary Air Injection Upstream flow code through my cheap-o reader, what could cause this?
Thanks

To the best of my knowledge you won't need to do the timing belt ubtil 90,000. Major VW maintanence occurs every 30,000 and the timing belt is usually every 90,000. This is what I always understood, but I have heard that if it is an automatic transmission than it should be done at 60,000 miles and with a manual 90,000 I don't believe this but I could be wrong.

I'm actually glad this was brought up, it gives me some VW things to research for my own VW stuff.

Here is something I found. Hope it helps.

The intervals shown in the table are based on vehicles operating under normal conditions. This applies particularly to engine oil changes and the cleaning or replacing of the air cleaner filter element.

Cole, at 70k change your timing belt, water pump and tensioner. If you can afford it, change it now - that's the most important thing do to around 70k. Your SAI (Secondary Air Injection) code sounds like a hose is cracked or is leaking on the uptake where it pulls the warm air into the pump. I'll have to get the repair manual out for that, but in the meantime you can inspect the SAI pump (lower front passengers side - it round, black and plastic) and the hoses.

So I was off a little bit. Mike where did you find this info. Out of all of the research I did last night everything was little different. Does the Bentley Manual tell you? I still need to get one.

The repair manual tells all, but I just know with the 1.8 to change the TB and components around 70k or risk it breaking. The repair schedule is in the owners manual and you can find it online too, but it's always open to interpretation on when maintenance is done.

Heh...the TB schedule isn't concrete...my Audi originally said 105K for the TB change. They've since amended it. My Passat manual said 90K. It's been common practice and encouragement in the community to change the TB around 70K due to faulty tensioners that were put on the 1.8T cars between '98 and '02.

Cole - I would do this as soon as you can - When i did mine, i think it was at 68,000 or something - the belt was already about to break, and the water impeller had broken in two places already. It is just not worth an engine for parts that cost 230 or so shipped and another 250 installed. Just not worth it.
IMO of course =)
