Exhaust Quieting Options

Post by JayRyan »

Hey guys. So here's the deal. I'm asking around on a couple different boards. I have a LOUD car. It's fine around town, but on the highway it's just constant drone. It was totally fine with the cat in, but I pulled that out.

I want to keep it out. The power gains were HUGE. That said, I know i will sacrifice by quieting it down a little bit. Any suggestions on doing this or shops in the Billings area that know what's going on?

You need a bypass of some sort.
The stock bypass was by far one of my favorite things about the R32, and I will likely try to figure out one for my new rig.
Basically you get two exhausts in one, loud for messing around, quiet for the highway.
So besides no cats, what is your set-up now?
These things are a bit too pricey, but you need some sort of valve. I believe RS4s have two valves in the stock exhaust. Then you need a loud path and a quiet path for the exhaust to pass thru, the valve goes on the loud path. One option is these mufflers.
Kind of a lot of work but in the end you have the best of both worlds.

Very true. Either of those aren't bad options. I had an R32 for a weekend a couple years ago and loved the bypass. If I was by myself and/or just driving around town, it wouldn't bother me. But we took the car down to Cody last Sunday and had to speak up because of the noise.

Currently, I have nothing between the turbo and my race muffler. It's a 3" Thermal R&D setup. Great sound, great power, just loud as hell on the highway. Had another Audi guy point to these: Vibrant Resonators. I like the idea of the "ultra-quiet" one. It still utilizes the "straight-through" design but has greater supression.

yeah look into a resonator. it will help kill the drone and quiet the car down a bit.
