On my OR trip I did some repairs and updates on Jetta. You prob saw the heater core pics. Here is my rundown.
Heater Core
Felted the dash
rear brake pads
rear wheel bearings and seals
fuel filter
oil filter
front sub frame bushings
F. Upper strut bearings
Heavy duty f. strut bushings
rehung the rear bumper with improved brackets
re hung the exhaust for a better fit
added a new sticker
Every piece of plastic or anything at all that touches has adhesive felt stuck to it, it makes it fit tighter and eliminated all rattles and plastic creaks. You can't see it. I will see if I have a pic of it going together so you can see what I mean. sorry no pic.
MikeWire wrote:A green scotch brite pad and some hot soapy water will remove it, but you really should pull the parts you are removing it from. I used a fine grit sandpaper too and that smoothed some of it out, but eventually I just removed it. Those plastics will come off Matt, you just need to go easy on them and do it when it's warm out. FWIW I have removed every interior plastic when I did the beige -> black swap and no part ever broke. Just go easy on them and don't use any metal screwdrivers or anything sharp.
Yeah so I have been working on removing my soft touch and I have removed pieces and it looks like crap. I used the green scotch brite pad but not sand paper. It is not shiny like the drivers side it is all swirled and looks terrible. I might have sanded to much. When you painted it before, did it work Mike or did it peel again. what kind of paint did you use. When I painted the handles on my GTI I used Plasticote out of a rattle can but it peeloed after awhile. Any paint that won't peel. I sort of expect the peeling on the pieces that are touched a lot but I think I can paint the pieces that are never touched. Did you prime it first or just spray them. I removed some of the pieces and need to remove them again. to remove the soft touch and to paint them. Ideas thoughts.
Matt, I need more coffee to answer all those questions.
Seriously, can we talk about that on Friday? Or make a new thread in the MKIV category so this threads stays on topic. I would like to see what yours look like, because I think mine looked fine with no soft touch or paint. I tried all kinds of things, and the only thing that looked good was nothing.
