Oh, so have you not driven it? Maybe it is timing belt from the last time it stopped. You might get lucky with that one....or not.

Yes they are interference motors, so hopefully they aren't bent. It doesn't sound like major surgery to replace bent valves though, so not really a big deal if they are - I'm up for repairing it. Just as long as nothing is destroyed.kompressorgolf wrote:16v's are an interference motor (valves) right? so i hope your valves arent toast.
For an update, I bought the timing kit, Bentley, G12, and the pin tool for the timing pulley from germanautoparts.com last night.
Anything else anybody would recommend doing? I'm not doing the water pump until I know for sure that it's not going to end up in the yard.
Looking forward to tearing further into the passengers side...

It all depends on what speed the motor was at when the belt let go. If it was at idle, you might be okay. If it was at 6500 rpm on the way up the pass, then you are pretty much screwed. EXCEPT! I have a spare 16V head just lying around. I don't know if it would fit the passat, but I just thought I would toss that out there.
Now onto the important stuff. Is it a wagon? B3 Passat wagons own all. Well that is just my opinion, but I plan on pimping a wagon in the future.....
You should also check out www.getcoolparts.com also. Super cheap parts and free shipping on orders over $50!

I may take you up on that spare head depending on what happens after I get the t-belt installed. The motor is the 16v 2.0 and i think was also in the Sciroccos and Jettas, so parts should be pretty available, and I bet your spare would bolt up. It's the sedan, but it was free and it's in pretty decent shape, just needs a little TLC and small parts here and there. My step dad put almost $1500 into getting the major stuff (fuel related) fixed and drove it for a while. He was just tired of it always being in the shop or breaking down on him.Rennwagen1 wrote:It all depends on what speed the motor was at when the belt let go. If it was at idle, you might be okay. I have a question regarding the ignition dizzy - the plastic around the hall sensor was broken, so I pulled the rest of the cheesy plastic shield out. Will that cause any problems when I reinstall it?

I don't think it will, I have seen them both ways, but I not sure. As long as you don't need it for the cap to stay on right or something stupid like that you should be fine. Also, the 16V head I have is off a 1.8, so it will flow a bit better then the 2.o you have. I know that one should be fine, I actually drove the car before I took it apart. Well, off to work!MikeWire wrote:Rennwagen1 wrote: I have a question regarding the ignition dizzy - the plastic around the hall sensor was broken, so I pulled the rest of the cheesy plastic shield out. I still stand behind my statement that B3 wagons own all.

Cool thank you for answering that question - The cap and rotor are fine, and was hoping the plastic wouldn't affect anything with the hall sensor. That's a pretty expensive replacement part...I would need to head out to the scrapyards.Rennwagen1 wrote:I don't think it will, I have seen them both ways, but I not sure. If you want to sell that head, I'll let you know probably next week if I need it. Any idea of what you would let it go for? That 1.8 head would bolt right on, correct? Edit: This is the 9A motor I believe...I'll double check tonight.
It seems like all wagons are really good looking when they are built up, but yeah I agree with you. I have seen some really nice variants on the Vortex.

If it is a 9A, then you should not hae a problem, but we will son some research beforehand. I should be getting my 9A block today from Poorhouse, hopefully, and that is getting another 1.8L head I have. (P&P, 3 angle, TT race cams, HD springs, Ti retainers, you know......)
