I recommended doing it much differently. including injectors and VR6 maf housing and software. I really hope this works out for him. He is a really a nice guy and has done some research.kompressorgolf wrote:there was a kid here that used to come in and talk to me all the time, and he wanted a faster 1.8t jetta, i talked him into updgrading to a K04 and software, he bought only the turbo and installed it, and the car ran like ass. he never got the software. i think he abandoned the project

Re: Low BoOst - Black Smoke under full throttle
to get the full effect of the ko4 on the revo software it calls for a downpipe, 4 bar fpr, and stage 2 chip. i have some reserve cash on hand for all of those things incase it just runs like shit. its interesting, on the vortex there is an entire thread of people talking about getting the k04 and just bolting it on and having it run fine, and then you hear other stories too. concerning. at this point i am going to stick with what 034, the revo guys, my mechanic and many other people have said and just run the turbo with the manifold as it is, if its fucking up, ill turn around drop it back at the shop, buy the tt downpipe and other parts i need and hook it up! debating just going for it anyways. ive been working an ass load. a faster car may be my gift to myself =)

It will more than likely run just fine. "Ass" can be subjective. You'll probably see the same or less power out of running a K04 without software.
Personally? Get the software; do it right. Velocity Motorsports will sell you a DP on ebay for $100. Thats' what I run. You'll be fine

Has Tim done a K04 upgrade before? I know he has done a lot with DSM cars. I was just curious because you said you wanted someone with experience in this procedure. I am not sure that he has done this particular upgrade before. Unless for course you are putting it in a DSM car
I think he would be great for bolting it up, but he shouldn't be tuning it, IMO. I can't wait to ride in it

I don't think he has done the k04, i know he has done many k03's. the are the same external dimension and everything, so it will be the same thing. and since im not tuning it yet, it will be fine at this point. unless i plan to go all out and get everything for it. we will see =)
I am confident that he will do a good job. If not, he will fix it =)

Re: Low BoOst - Black Smoke under full throttle
So, I have the car back, its throwing some codes because the 02 sensors are shot and the cat is fouled. other than that its running like a champ. I am going to get an overboost kit (well i already ordered it) because the car is more than willing to boost past 25 psi if you let it.
Apparently this is a symptom of the high flow manifold.
Easily dispatched with though, This turbo is strong, its a really powerful upgrade, though that could be because of how bad my old turbo was!! I am uploading a video of how much shaft play is on this turbo, its crazy!!
I have the techtonics downpipe in, its looking sweet!!
I can't wait to get that on and working well. I wish i had a shop to do the work, i think josh and i might try to muscle it on there, IF we do, i will also want to put that FMIC on at the same time, that will help with the overboost issue as well since the turbo will have to pressurize the intercooler
here are said photos....
