Mk3 Trunk Build....now with pics!

Post by Rennwagen1 »

I am thinking I am going to change up my stereo in the Jetta this weekend. I am going to take out the fibergalss spare tire well enclosure and build a more traditional MDF enclosure/amp rack towards the front of the trunk. I like the build I have now, as it is really simple and you almost don't know it is there, but I have changed subs (Alpine Type-R 12 to a Memphis M3 40thAE 12) and it is way to big. I realise that this thread does nothing for anyone without pics, so I will post some up as soon as I can. Anyway, later. Oh and if anyone is looking for an Alpine Type-R 12 with like 40 hours on it, LMK. I will post in FS also.

Anyway, this is what the trunk looked like before. One Memphis M3124D 12" sub in a fiberglassed enclosure in the spare tire well. THe enclosure was waaay to big for it, and it sounded like crap.

The amp rack didn't change much, this is what it looked like before and after, without trim plate, of course.
Image

With the amps and front plate removed. I like to hid all my stuff, cap, crossovers, power/ground blocks. I like simple, so you don't usually see anything.
Image

Dynamatted and stripped rear, waiting for floor panel
Image

Floor panel, cut and contoured to fit the trunk exactly, so no slipping and sliding around.

Sub enclosure mocked up before screwing, glueing and sealing. It is a 2.5 cu.ft box. Actually it is a 2.73 cu ft box, but with internal bracing and driver displacement it brings it back down to 2.52 Cu ft. I figured that .02 off was acceptable!

Random shop day pic, and some more Missoula Dubs/Audis!

New internal amp rack. Just moved some wiring around. The outer one didn't change any from the above pic.

The enclosure carpeted and installed. I will be trimming off the floor and the amp rack soon, I just didn't have time to do it this weekend.

That is pretty much it. I is much louder than it was before and sounds awesome. I love sealed boxes! Thank you Memphis Car Audio!

That is why you have many cars, one to go fast, one to pimp out, one to travel in.....

Did you put some artificial turf in the back of yours?

I have a pic somewhere of an entire trunk build done in LEGOS. I ruled the school. Complete with city scene and little people all around it.....

I started working on the trim out for the amp rack last night and a bit tonight. No pics, but I will have some more soon. I am trimming the rack out in hardwood also to keep with the theme, but with a more refined approach. Norm on the new yankee workshop would be proud! I used my mitre box saw, and wood glue and my air stapler! And I used the proper OSHA approved hearing and eye protection! Not really. :ninja:

On a sadder note, I realised that both the MK1 Jetta and A6 in the pics above are both gone now....... :tear:

I love the woodish floor, I have been tring to do something with mine. Is there a way to mount the subs on the side. Like one on the left and one on the right, any ideas with pics. I'mnot very habdy but I'd like to have my sound with room. I only have one now, but want to have two and out of the way.
