Baja / Sandrail Project!

Post by Gatorp2 »

all info and comments are welcome so please do! i need to round up as much info as i can about what i have.
this is going to be a budget build so most of the modifications made should be pretty modest.

so i just picked up this old rail from a guy in town, my dad and i are gonna do it as a father son project. we got the rail, a fresh 1600 DP and a whole pile of parts with allot of new stuff! its built off an old bug with the pan shortened by at least a foot so it might be interesting to see how well the front end stays on the ground once i get the power plant in.

the first thing i plan to do is get rid of the goofy windshield frame and build the cage right! i have a garret t-3 turbo i have been itching to put on an aircooled and i think this is the lucky winner! probbly gonna put some sheet metal on it and set it up for rallyin through the trails.

i dont know what year it is but i know its got to be pretty early from the looks of the the rear suspension the engine i have is outta a later bug and should work well.

i have had a few VW projects but most have been all stock so any tips and tricks ya got bring it on!

Well not normally but i got allot of stuff lying around i am pretty good at fabbing... i can fab up the whole setup from what i got and the only thing that will get spendy is the oil cooler setup... i tore down the 1600 today and am cleaning/stripping everything and gonna put on a fresh coat of paint and reseal everything. i figure first step is to get it running so thats whats happening now.... i do need a set of good seats if anyone's got some racing buckets lying around i'm in the market

wait.. you are keeping that frame? It looks like a death trap. Oil coolers are cheap too btw. You should ditch the swing arm suspension for an IRS setup, much better.
