My 1986 Porsche 944

Post by Johnny Chopsticks »

Hi all,

This is my first time to this forum (thanks to Checkers for the invite last autumn), and thought I would post some pictures of my 1986 Porsche 944. I took these pictures today (1/18/10), after spending several hours polishing the paint due to plenty of freakishly warm sunny days.

Also below are some pics of the stereo system I built and installed myself.

Enjoy!

The place where I work has both sandblasting and powdercoating available. To save on costs, I sandblasted each aluminum wheel myself, and had a colleague powdercoat them. It took 4 hours PER WHEEL to sandblast due to the coating bond Porsche uses, making it VERY hard to remove the coating :banghead:.

Image
On the brightside, my colleague sprayed a special coating over the powdercoating that basically makes the wheel extremely scratch/chip proof. This is evident, knowing the rims were powdercoated about 5 years ago!

Image
I installed a Pioneer AVH-P7500DVD deck, hiding the brain unit under the dash on the passenger side. The wiring was ridiculous, but it was totally worth it.

Image

Image
I built a dual sealed enclosure for my hatchback, making it as large as possible with a little room for safety (like the use of a rearview mirror, or clearance for the hatch to close easily). I plan on installing much larger subs in this box one day, and it was designed for such.

Image
The amplifiers are both Kenwood KAC-9152D's (900W rms, 1800W Peak EACH), hooked up to four 1/2 farad capacitors (totalling 2 farads). One of these amps can blow both of my subs, but again, I'm planning on getting better subs in the future.

Image
The wiring on the back of the box alone took over six hours, but I'm very happy with the results.

Image
NOTE: The amps are in fact square; the photo just make them look caddywhompus.

Image
I also installed a 12-disc cd player in the passenger side rear quarter panel pocket and an Ipod receiver under the dash, which are both controlled by the Pioneer deck.

During the summer of 2004, I got t-boned by a speeding government official (can't say who), and was accused of being the driver at fault :finger:. I took it to a small body shop and helped the body repairman as much as possible. He under-estimated the time and cost in fixing the damage: he quoted 2 weeks, but it ended up taking 9 months. This was mostly due to him working on other automobiles rather than mine in order to stay in business.

Image
This is a cell phone pic of the car the day I got it back. The repair quality is apparent in the first few pictures posted. I hated the previous color.

Image
There is no substitute.

Well I hope you enjoyed viewing the pictures almost as much as I enjoyed taking them. Please feel free to ask me anything about my 944 (I've been through Hell and back with her). Also please comment!

P.S. I'm located in Bozeman and currently attending MSU (where Checkers tagged my car).

Thanks everyone! It's been a challenge to keep it clean since even dust shows up on the black paint. I have studded winter tires for it, but I decided a few years ago to no longer drive it in the winter (I have nearly been hit by other sliding vehicles, and don't want to deal with the headache). I plan on adding an amplifier to power both the rear and door speakers sometime in the future, and perhaps even add some more speakers in the hatch area. But that is still wishful planning for now  .
