Another update from it's new home:
Got a bunch of misc parts from a cool guy in Kalispell. He's was parting out another Caddy and Rabbit to make a diesel of his own. He was happy to help with the project, telling me that he was happy that another Vdub was on the road again. My next trip up I will pick up his back window to replace my plexiglass one. He's got the original tire carrier that goes under the frame - hopefully he saved that too.
Had an alignment done as soon as I got home from doing the front end and brake work. MAN -- what a scary ride home.
Pop riveted in the new nylon holders for the headlight aiming buckets and have good solid lights now.
Worked for a day on the door latching mechanism and handles (stunk up the house for three days - should have used the cleaners in the driveway instead of the kitchen sink) and got them to work with a 'one finger pull' to open.
Reset the tumblers and now can lock the doors - not that I'd ever want too.
Painted the black rhino lined tail gait back to silver - couldn't see the thing in the dark - afraid someone would rear end me. BTW don't rattle can something that large in the bathroom -- makes a real big mess!
Gave it an antifreeze change again, and two more oil changes in the past 1000 miles.
Hard to keep my foot off the gas...
Ordered a set of General Altimax HP tires (good ratings on tirerack website) - should have them on by next week. Hoping for a quieter and more responsive ride over the partial studdies that are on it now.
Seems to be a lot quieter and handling is more responsive. Will have an alignment done again, as it set the tires and wheels out a quite a bit further than the old steelies.
I should have put 195/60's on them instead of 185's -- the speedometer is reads fast. 57mph is actually 55.
Oh well, next time.
