Really Poor Gas Mileage

Post by bigmontana »

I'm sure this has been brought up before and I know I have brought it up but I cannot remember what I was told (mushy Brain syndrom) I went to dickinson yesterday and between Billings and back to Billings I had to fill up for times. Each tank I was not completly empty but I only averaged 18 mpg. Now I know with the VR its a little pooer but 18. I'm thinking I might need to replace my O2. Last year I installed a new MAF and plugs and air filter. I'm just curious if anyone can shed any light. I'll be doing more research too, to figure this out. Thanks guys.

The other thing I noticed is it seems a little under powered at times it goes fine at 105 on the freeway but from quick take offs it sometimnes seems to hesitate might be related not sure.

this sounds stupid... but with the way the winds are to the east is has a big effect on mileage... especially with a rack on top...

this is jurgen, wind tested, jurgen approved

I like how Jurgen never uses his account anymore. He must be having lots of sleepovers at josh's!

Wind can have alot to do with it, but you might look into the o2 sensors also. My VR will get up to 29mpg, and it is 13 years old! You might check plugs and wires also. Basic tuneup stuff.

I agree with the rack thing I don't think the wind was that bad even for eastern MT and ND but it shouldn't suck it down that bad i wouldn't think. I replaced my MAF and plugs last year but I was thinking the o2 Sensor Aeron I just wanted to see if I was on base there. I'll price one out I can't remember if we did wires at the same time or not. I'll have to look. If not maybe I'll do them too. I'm going back at Easter and I'd like this to be fixed. So I can spend money on something other than gas. Thanks for the help. I'll call and price the part out.

just look at it, the sensor that is, and tell us if it is green or black. It's a good thing to check and an easy fix. It is the sensor on the far left of the three. Hope that helps.
