Trouble with my 2004 GTI
Hello, new to this forum and own A 2004 GTI 1.8 t a 77 baywindow and a 2004 Touareg. I am having issues with my GTI. It seems to be running on three. I pulled the coils and plugs. 3 plugs were most likely original and one had been replaced in the past with a ngk along with the coil on that plug (aftermarket no name). I do not have a code reader yet but is there a way to ohm out the coils? I am replacing the plugs with ngk iridiums but am thinking on ordering the audi style coils from ECS and a code reader. What are some of your thoughts. thanks

Re: Trouble with my 2004 GTI
Howdy and welcome.
Well, it sounds like an ignition coil to me...the 1.8T is know to chew up coils. First off, I would buy 4 new revision D coils (aka coil packs) and swap them all out, keeping the known working ones for spares. And, IMHO stick with a non-iridium plug. I had problems with the iridium blowing out at high RPM's, so I switched back to Bosch OEM coppers and have been fine, although you could try the iridiums and see how they work for you - plugs are relatively cheap.
Definitely get a code reader. I would really suggest getting a VCDS (vag-com) cable and software package, but you can also go with an eBay cable and the free version of the VCDS software. I haven't tried the ECS reader, but it's probably just a standard OBDII reader, which won't give you the specific codes needed to properly diagnose problems. But, it will get you basic info. You can always hit one of us up for a scan as well - there are a few of us depending on where you are located.

Well, if you have a VW dealer nearby you should swing it by them. Can't believe I forgot to mention...there is a recall on the coils and they should replace them all with rev D coils at little or no cost to you. I actually was reimbursed the cost on all for of my coils by AOA - no dealer very close, I bought them at the local VW service shop and sent in my paperwork for reimbursement.

New coils on the way from ECS I will hang on to the old ones and see what the dealer in Fargo ND can do for me. I'm gonna wait on the code reader. I'm gonna snoop around at them for a bit. There still has to be a way to ohm the coils.
