Project Family Bug

Post by bigmontana »

For those of you who dont know I have a 63 Beetle. It was given to me two years ago by my dad, and now I'm going to restore it. It has been in my family since he bought it in 1964 in Los Angelos. And it has been sitting in their garage since I wrecked it in 1996. So now I'm going to revive the old guy. Well after 14 of sitting in the garage collecting shit (Right Mike), Mike helped me remove and drain the tank. For 14 year old gas it was actually really good. The gas wasnt varnished or anything. So we removed the gas and now we are going to get it rolling as soon as I can aford to buy a new batter and lines. I cant wait. It is in really good shape so I'm not going to do anything to it. My plans are to convert it to a 12 volt system, put in a bigger motor, replace the original transmission with a bigger newer one, redo the seats and carpet, paint it and away we go. I just want to get it running so I can drive it as is this summer. Since it might be my only car.

Here are some pics

Needs a battery, that shit's $90! Maybe someone has an old 6V they can donate.

I think that we barely got that beetle back in the garage - it's so stuffed full. I did like the Christmas light storage in the drivers seat AND the 8th grade "art" project in the back seat. Get it over to my house and we will have it running in about an hour.

Good call Brandon - replacing the fuel lines and adding some clamps would be a good thing to do too.

i would also make sure that the valves are in adjustment, seems like thats the only thing that ever got these old motors down. after sitting docile for so long im sure it could use some new valve cover gaskets, as they just might leak like a sieve once that motor gets hot again (dry), as said above, i would rock it as is, the tranny should do just fine, motor too, it wont be a power house but it will get the job done
