I'm pretty sure it was the rod, after finding out it was just the one that broke I remembered one rod when I was installing the ARP bolt's the bolt head fit a little loose and had a tough time torquing it down, all of the bolts pressed into the rods except one, and the more I think about it I am almost sure it was the one that broke, may have been machined wrong and was defective, but then again it was hallin ass, it never pulled like that "ever before", so.... ether or! it seemed like it over boosted and broke, I don't see what boost would do the the shaft, it was only at 5k rpm, I have never heard about shaft problems, what kind of conditions do they fail under? just age? maybe have it cryogenic treated? just in case.Roadhog wrote:Was probably the IM shaft that went first, and took the rest with it. I've heard of those being a weak point.

actually those are the rods I meant that come with bearings and ARP bolts, the scat rods are on the same site and cost more without bearings, the IE rods should match the hp I would think, anyone know what they are rated too?Roadhog wrote:Also, a lot of people seem to like these rods. They are nicely priced too.

i dont know the rating, but there are many cars with IE's rods and they seem to be doing the trick, when i put together my built bottom end, i will use Integrated rods.

here are a few more snuff pix for the morbid viewer
new block vent's

piston is sideways

a better view

some spare parts for keep sakes

here is a pic of my t-3/t-4 turban compared to a typical t-3 turban, check out the wastegate size, it may be the larges t-3 footprint internal wastegate available I have found

Did you check to see if they will replace your rods?
It's not how fast you go. It's how well you go fast.

Re: twin charged 16v Scirocco (broken rods)
they where stock rods, I think one was drilled a little big from the factory, no big deal with stock hp, owe well, life is all about the lessons we endure, and performance engine building is an expensive course, no more stock blocks for meMT-Getto wrote:Did you check to see if they will replace your rods?

I will need a 93 or 94 to get the forged crank, mileage isn't as important since I am rebuilding but would prefer not to have to bore the block, do you know if they would ship to Dillon?digsmk3 wrote:Place i got wants 300 to 450 for a complete motor depending on miles he has about 6 from 80k to 150k let me know

also I found out the IE rods are tested to 750+hp should do the trick! they actually run them into failure for testing, I assume they fail at alot higher then 750hp, I wouldn't think I am much over 400hp, at least with rods and pistons I wont mind running a dyno to see, having a stock block was one of my reserves in doing dyno runs, hate to make a mess on someones equipment

Re: twin charged 16v Scirocco (broken rods)
im curious to see what this 020 can take, its obviously bionic to say the least anything above 250 whp, is incredible, mine still works, but days before i tore into her again, i can tell it was reaching SMS syndrome, (self machining syndrome) with 300whp on 3-4-5 gear pulls, guys strip the teeth right off of them, and or twist the case enough to explode it internally. granted if you arent racing on it etc, i can see how one could hold out for a while.
ps. i love the side-ways piston trick! thats pretty neat
