Tank pulled and dropped off to be cleaned and coated. I decided to do it after good advice from Randy @ Randy's Bug Works.

Got stuck with removing bad manifold studs, so I need to drop them off and have them removed or tapped for new studs. So it was time to pull the heads, which gave me a look at the condition of the hardware:

Not bad at all, in fact I think I got lucky with this motor.

Then today with help from Matt I installed most of the rest of the interior after cleaning it up:

Matt also helped me grab a couple of Masonite sheets so I can make new side panels. The plan is to use the old intact and in good shape vinyl and glue it to the new panels.

Time to replace the crusty old rear window seal with a new one. I also took the opportunity to fix the little bit of rust in the window channel and touch it up with some primer and paint. My wonderful wife helped me get the window all the way in a sealed up:

I turned out OK for a quick grind and paint  .

J - I would love to drive it on the cruise. I guess we will see how reliable it is and if I think it would make the trip and not hold me/us up. Goal #1 is to get it running, and goal #2 is to drive to Billings from my house with little to no issue. Then I would feel more secure about a long trip. Although, it is hard to beat the comfort and speed of the Audi :)

Thanks 4est - the jugs are in about the same condition. No to very little lip and all nice and smooth with no marring/scoring or anything, although I didn't pull them off to look at the piston skirts I think if the rest of the motor is in the same condition as the head and what I can see, everything should be all set. I would almost guess this was rebuilt at one time, or it's a really low mileage motor. All the numbers on the case and shroud match up, so I would say just really low mileage.

For the rust I used a 3M paint/rust removing disc kit on my corded DeWalt drill. It comes in a 2 pack and I just picked it up at Lowes in the hand tool area. It made quick work of that rust and most of the pitting. Next time I will pick up a little body filler though because I can see the old paint layers under the new paint - not that it needs to be perfect, but it would look better and at least it's rust free. Most importantly, it's leak free in the back now.

Dropped the heads off for work - one has been reman'd, the other has also had work which is not uncommon for ACVW heads. One of the exhaust bosses is messed up, but I think I can make it work. New heads are $400 each...I have less than that invested in the entire project lol. So I will make them work.

Trying to finish up the interior work and made some panels last night:
