Hm, I thought I mentioned it, but I am using the original vinyl covering. It's in fine shape, just the fiber board had gotten wet over the years and was warped and disintegrating. I'll use super 90 to adhere it to the board - VW never used staples on the panels, just glue. Once it test fit the board, I'll glue the vinyl and it should match 100%.

Lets see, I got the tank back - nice and clean and I did end up going with the coating, so we will see how that goes. I also picked up the repaired heads from Randy's and got new pushrod seals, intake boots, and a few feet of vac line. Hopefully I can start putting it back together and paint the tins and valve covers with POR-15 this weekend.

They will work, but they are a mess. Turns out they both have had work done, and have been welded due to cracks, or preventions, and one head has helicoils for spark plug threads. I had to have the shop use inserts for a few manifold studs that had pulled out and one of the bosses has been ground down a bit so I will need to use something to seal it up tight.

Other than that, the valves and seats and everything else is ok. Considering a new or rebuilt set of heads run into $800 for a pair, these will need to work for now. It's not my daily, so I'm not too worried about it for now. But it will be something to watch over time as I drive it more.

Updates -

Painted intake runners, fan shroud, valve covers, and tins (POR-15):

I'll probably end up painting the tins with a coat or two of satin black implement paint, just so they look better than the POR-15.

I  POR15.

Just did the entire interior of my CJ7 with PO15, and just finished my first coat of Hurculiner. Got at least 2 more coats to go.
Holy prep work Batman. I spent the last 2 1/2 days stripping, sanding, degreasing, cleaning, POR15'n, scuffing etc.......just to line the interior. It's worth it though. Prep work sucks but gotta start with a good foundation or you just wasted an ass load of time!!!

Made a little progress and got the engine and tins mostly assembled. Just got a few missing parts I need to get the headers/exchangers and the exhaust bolted on and finish the vac and egr line and I should be able to get it in the bus. Of course first I need to clean out the fuel tank area, put the tank back in and hook the filler hose back up, then I need to get a battery tray made and get the electrical hooked up. Then I can test the electrical things out and I will have my fire extinguisher at hand just in case. Once I know I have a solid 12V bus, I will be able to get power to the F.I. and get it running.
