1969 bus stuck in reverse

OOOOOK...so... contemplating buying a 1969 walkthrough that is a bit of a frankenstein. it actually has a buick 231 engine in it w/the original trans adapted to it. apparently it is stuck in reverse. upon first hearing that one would assume that the buick v6 is just too much for the tranny, however after much research i have found that this swap is not uncommon. So i guess my question is, could it be somethine simple? a linkage problem perhaps? or should i run away screaming for my mommy? any advice is welcome! thanks!

The linkage on the older buses are very finicky, its probable just bound up! my beetle is kinda wonky too, and sometimes it dont wanna come outta second!

theres a lot of play in the shifter, seems to be working all the way thru the trans tho. im thinkin somethin must be broken off in the trans?

quite possible, those trans were never meant to handle any kind of real power
