Matt's 39 chevy street rod build

Post by kompressorgolf »

Matt finally got his 39 chevy down to bozeman after it running in his family since we were driving our first cars  now we have the skills needed to make this a bad ass, here is the start of our first old old school project, and i gotta say its been a real treat so far.
It really looks alot rougher than it really is, it will show as pics go on.

OG wood floor was fully removed with only a shovel :)

some of the 2900 or so pounds of scrap metal we wont be re-using

so much cool shit to have powdercoated on this truck!

boom, shaved bay already :)
Image
the lower back of the cab, lovingly refered to as a firewood magnet, looked as if it was hit 10000 times with a ball peen then attempted to be straightened so off with its head
Image
notice the beat center support, we ended up cutting it out straightening and welding it back in
Image
almost fully welded

lastly the gas tank was under the seat, and will be moved to the rear of the bed and between the frame rails
so the filler hole needed to go.

this was only the first week and a half of work! this this being about 72 years old, came apart so easily nothing was rusted solid yet all bolts and screws were still tight etc. the whole interior was put together with flatheaded screws and they all came out with ease!

the game-plan, fully smoothed, the truck was a 3/4 ton and we will "Z" notch the frame and shorten it between 12 and 15 inches to make it a 1/2 ton short box. it will also need a "C" notch to go all the way down. a mustang2 or pinto front suspension setup will be used, with a 4 link rear. maybe on bags, well see. will be running a 700R4 trans with a 350 or 383 11ish:1 small block at around 500hp. sprayed in maybe Audi Tri-stage pearl white or a white of some kind with black powdercoated interior and engine accents stay tuned :)

no chop top on this, we thought about it, but its already a "low roof cab" one of the first years for it so were going to leave it. we eyeballed a few with a chop and it ruins the proportioning of the truck. would love some bags tho!

its nice too, the body on these dwarfs most of the frame and the rockers take care of the rest, that way there isnt any need to "body drop" it to make for more lowering, they pre engineered it to work that way 72 years ago :)

http://www.airbagit.com (they suck i dont recommend them at all)
http://www.hornblasters.com (much better place to deal with)

when you start thinking about air here is my advice.. get at least 10 gallons of air tank, and run at least 2 air compressors (viair 400 or better). you will need lots of alternator power to run compressors (each draws around 25 amps).. DONT GET THE GARBAGE MANIFOLD VALVES!!! get individuals (8pack) of at least 3/8" or 1/2" (much faster at moving air)... Firestone air bags suck, i run slam specialties, air lift dominator are good too)

anyways here is a little price list i tossed together for you.. should cover everything but steel and labor (thats for you to figure out :))

DOT, 12 Gallon (45.4 Liter) 8 Port, Black Air Tank $84.99
SMC 1/2in NPT, 15mm Orifice, 217 PSI air valve $48.99 each (8 needed)
Viair 480C x2, Constant Duty, 200 PSI, 100% Duty, 3.53 CFM $399.95
SMC 1/2in Heavy Duty Check Valve $18.99 each (at least 5 needed)
HornBlasters 1/2in D.O.T. Reinforced Air Line (By 10ft) $10.49 (need around 40ft)
Viair 165-200 PSI Heavy Duty Pressure Switch w/ Leads $19.95
Air Lift D2500 Dominator 2500lb Air Bag (2B6 Gen. IV) $64.99 (4 needed)
somewere around $200 in NPT brass fittings from ACE
and what ever air management you wanna run (i run a cheasy $30 10 switch box)

plus some little things like relays, and wire. (all prices taken from Hornblasters site, some things are cheaper elsewere)

i have a vid of the volvo around... its just hard to get it to my computer cuz its on a brand new digi cam. and it wont talk to my computer. ill see what i can do for you today thou
