WTB: Jetta III

Post by Mikewire »

Guys,
I need a second daily driver for Beth (my wife) and I was thinking a Jetta III, Honda or Subie from the mid to late 1990 years or newer, 4 cyl or VR (30MPG or better) with a budget of around 2K-3K. Not too picky, but we need something with a straight body, power windows and locks preferred, needs to have cruise, not too concerned with mechanical or mileage. I will have the kids in the back too, so it needs to be safe. Anyone have anything they know of or are wanting to part with? I'm in no real hurry, but would like to find something within the month.

I'm watching CL too.

How's the MPG on the highway with the VR?

you can get mpg in the high 20s on the highway, averaging 90 something. I can never drive a VR slow enough to get good mpg. It always seems worth the few extra bucks. haha
watch those subies they blow head gaskets (or at least a couple people I know have had it happen recently)

Thats the early 2.5's. The late 2.5s and the 2.2s are okay.
It's not how fast you go. It's how well you go fast.

If it's a VW, then definitely 5 speed, sorry I should have mentioned that. Subie or Honda, I would still prefer a 5 speed but I would consider an auto if it's a good deal.

So it's safe to say that I can get decent highway mpg - something similar to the Audi where I get around 28mpg. Much better than 17mpg (or less) driving the Tahoe every day, and it has a 26 gallon tank, so it's expensive to fill up.

Jurg, that coal burner sounds like a good deal but I don't think I can put my wife and kids in it, it sounds like a problem child.

Forrest, I'm going to run that Golf by my wife and see what she thinks, and maybe give the guy a call. From that pic it almost looks like that rust runs into the center down between the lights, or is it just the snow?
