Brakepads: Which One of These is Not Like the Other?

Post by JayRyan »

One of my favorite games to play:

Brakepad Game: by JayFriesen, on Flickr

Pulled them off of the Audi tonight (after brakes went to the floor once on Friday then started grinding like mad). Good news is that this is the source of the persistent squeak that I've been unable to locate for the last year and a half and I know have the rear brake caliper tool if anyone wants to use it. Bad news is wtf happened to the one pad?!

Jeebus! If you're not careful, one of your rotors will end up like my e28. No bueno.

What pads were you running?

These were stock pads...thought I changed them out a year after I bought the car- guess I didn't but seeing the other three makes me not second guess that decision, they're fine. That fourth one though was off the back so I couldn't see it/check it.

:screwy:

Oh yeah, and I didn't actually drive the car after the brakes gave out. I was about two miles from my house so I drove it home and parked it until I got the new pads on.

WOW!!!! was there any unusual wear on the rotor? ive never seen that before unless it was a bad pad right from the factory...why not just upgrade to hawk pads?

It's a calilper pin issue. The bolts that mount the rear caliper to the axle need to move freely (pull them off you'll notice the mounts move). If they don't, the caliper won't follow the piston compression and it'll happen again. Heavy use rips 'em right off the brake backing.
