So on the 8v motors ... was that a factory option for the GTi? Or are owners/sellers confusing their speced out Golfs for a GTi?

They did make an 8v GTI, but they were basically just a dressed up golf. They had the GTI body side skirts, bumpers, and interior. But the motor, brakes (drum rear) and suspension were basically just a golf.

Yah, I'd prefer to stay a way from drums. Unless of course it's upgraded. If anything, I'm still very much entertaining the idea of an engine swap from your Jetta.

I am pretty sure, but not 100%, that the early 8v GTi's ('85 & '86, maybe '87) did have disks all around, and the 8v engine was a little more potent (CIS FI) than the standard Golf/Jetta engine. But, like MT-Getto says, the big bumper 8v GTi's are really just "GTi look".

Personally, if are looking for the GTi experience, you can't go wrong with any of the 16v Mk2 GTi's.

So with the 8v vs. the 16v, is there much difference between the chassis, suspension type or anything else aside from the engine and the brakes?

I ask because if I can find a GTi and it's only an 8v, with the only difference between that and 16v is the engine and all other things the same - it would make a good car to accept MT Getto's hotted up 16v.
