cat converter

Post by choptopvolksrod »

hey does anybody have a spare cataletyc converter for an 03 1.8 awp 5spd manual jetta? or does anybody know where i can get a decent new one for not much cash haha. im not much of a watercooled guy so im not sure where to get good parts other than OEM (EXPENSIVE) and between wanting to go drag racing every other weekend and other projects im lacking funds so i can live with cheap i guess lol.

Is yours bad or does it just throw a code?

im pretty sure its bad. its got a p0420 cat efficiency below threshold code and i did an update on it at work to de-sensetize the 02 sensors and the light went out for a couple months then came back on.

Damn I have been having the same issue - don't know if mine is flashed with the ECU update though. I am suspecting a bad post cat o2 sensor, or possibly an exhaust leak somewhere pre-cat - maybe something to consider. If you have VCDS you can monitor blocks 34, 36 and 46 and visually see if the temps and values are correct.

i did the update here at my work. i warok at the vw dealership here in great falls so i used the VAS 5051B to do my update. ill deff have to check the MVB's but ive fixed the same code with post cat O2 sensor once and with news cats a couple of times i fixed an 03 golf with a 2.0 and an 08 2.5 jetta with cats when they came in with p0420 cat efficienc codes, i think i remeber seeing a tech bulletin in replacing one of the O2 sensors when you had a p0420 and another associated code, but ive noticed if you only have the efficiency code its most likely the cat (dont take my word for it because you still need to check pre and post cat O2's but its something ive noticed)

Just about lost mine yesterday. Drove away with it and my netbook on the roof. Cable stayed put, netbook did not :banghead:

Right on, and yes, the real VAS tool is hella proper  . I talked with a service manager over here in Billings about tech positions at the future VW dealership they are building here. Problem is, I'm an IT guy now, and I wrench on the side. Maybe you can put in a good word for me lol

I have gotten the bank 1 code as well as the P0420 code intermittent, so maybe a flash would fix the problem, dunno.

As far as cheap, well that's not easy unless you can find a low mileage used cat online (vortex maybe) or you could upgrade to a TT cat and exhaust - not cheap, but it will give you free boners FOR LIFE

Or, go catless. :ninja:

Trev, does it POST? Or did you smash it? /threadjack
