So I pulled the head on my Passat 16v and expected to find some really bent valves. But, I don't see anything really bad, or bad at all. Would you guys take a look at the pictures I took and let me know what you think?
looks ok to me. but i did see the pic of the teeth on the timing belt sheered off. best way to check for sure would to have the head psi checked. i think only a machine shop can tell for sure.
are there any marks in the top of the pistons from valve + piston contact?

Yep the teeth on the belt were shredded. Granted I doubt the belt had ever been changed and the odo has 141+k on it. So, I figure it is a bad belt/possible head warpage from overheating (thx for the tip custom vw). I have yet to check it on a straightedge because I have another head to replace the one with bent valves...only no valves look bent. No marks on the pistons - just the indent.

well if you don't see marks from piston to valve contact then i would suspect the valves are fine.
the car over heated? as you said check with a straight edge by going from corner to corner, side to side and using feeler gauges to check for a gap.
if all checks out fine slap it back on and fire her up!
ps: id be willing to take one of those 16v heads off your hands. (future plan for the rocco)

I envy that simple engine. I really should have picked something like that as my first project, but no, I have to choose something with the complexity of the space shuttle. Trial by fire, I guess.

Cool - a new gasket and it's back on the road. Anyway the extra head is yours - how about $100? I paid $125 +shipping (sux) but I want it out of my garage.

I can relate to that. But the Rado is rather simple... sorta..
