seems to be the maf at the moment casueing problems when we diconted it it stared up just fine with out the RPMs bouncing. but will keep lookin in to it...

I bet it's the CAI causing the problem. When you unplug the MAF the ECU defaults the A/F ratios and normalizes any issues. With the CAI you are getting more air coming in, which is causing more fuel to be dumped in, some of which can't be fully burned off and over time it seeps past the rings and into the oil.
Not a good thing for the cat either, as it has to work harder to pull the extra emissions out which makes it less efficient and shortens it's life.
Try putting the stock airbox back on and see if it stops the bouncing RPMs. If it doesn't then you may have something wrong with the MAF, but usually you'll see a CEL or at least a stored code. So my $$ is on the CAI.
2.0's may be the exception to the rule, because mine rarely had anything wrong with it as well. I shouldn't have sold it either, but now I have a VR6

my mk3 vr is crystal clean too, with a neuspeed cold air, runs down through the charcoal can hole. anyways, have you scanned it yet? CEL? clean the maf and TB as well. my bet is maf.

yeah if it runs fine without the maf, then it is the maf.

hey john thaks for giving me the credit for unplugging the MAF! haha the kid pulled into my driveway and was like hey man my car runs like shit and it had a maf code s i was like unplug it and see how it starts and wouldnt you know it, it started up fine. he thought i was crazywhen i told him to do that lol

lol i was wondering when you would pop in lol. an he finaly told me who stoped buy there lol. he never told me you read the codes tho??? he kept asking me ideas lol. glad he got so good advise an solved the problem!! now his clutch is sliping lol. i think he should cahnge the MAF asap tho. before he goes an hot rods it some more. ohh an the clutch too
