I stuck with an generator because of the price and I want to keep the motor looking stockish. The bug broke down on me in Manhattan on Saturday, the splines on one of the drums sheared off. I was stuck there overnight. So my friend and I went to the bars I will say, two people sleeping in a bug overnight in swimwear and towels for blankets makes for a cold and uncomfortable sleeping experience.
i gotcha. i went through 3 voltage regulators and 2 generators and finaly saif F it haha. did your axle nut come loose? at last years NYP one of mine came loose and each spline in the drum was only like 1/16 of an inch wide. but way to make the best of a bad situation! cant say i wouldnt have done the same thing lol. sleeping in a bug sucks for one person, sucks you had to sleep with another person in there, but thats all part of the experience and "privlage" of owning an aircooled vw!
Got the bug back up and moving last night. I'm planning on entering it in the Bozeman Main St. car show this weekend. Here is a pick of the sleeping arrangement from last weekend.
I finally got to looking at the bug after it had been sitting for months. Started fine..sort of. The solenoid on the starter engages but wont turn the starter. So i used a screw driver to jump power to the motor. Most of the new rubber parts I just put on it last year have failed. The motor is getting dropped out, stock crank pulley, new generator, stock oilcooler delete(external with fan), rebuilding one of the carbs I have, more crank case ventilation, get a horn working on it, new starter, and couple other odds and ends to come. Hopefully it will be back on the road in two weeks. With the weather the way it has been I could be driving it. But watch I finish it up and it will snow till July.
GOOD GOD! You scared the shit out of me Trev. It was in the driveway when I left work. Got home and it was were I left it. You might of been looking in the wrong driveway. It doesnt help that all the houses on that street look the same. If the bug wasnt parked there I probably would never find my house.
