Overheating issues...pulled the thermostat and ran water through the system and it just boiled away. Since I just replaced the pump, I am assuming the radiator is probably no good and is not cooling. Ordered a new radiator from GAP, with a new cap and a new right mirror since they had them in stock.

Finally picked one of these up. Man are they getting expensive! Thanks to eBay I got this for about $30:

Shoulda called me. I think I have two. I would have charged you more money though. I call it a rabbit tax. As in, you own one, prepare to open your wallet.

Finally a new radiator showed up. Went with the '83-'84 Rabbit with no reservoir option from GAP. Instead of the rubber isolators, this one has pins in the bottom, so I drilled a couple of holes and it slid right in place. New cap, lower hose and a thermal fan switch too.

I have solid heat from the vents and the coolant circulates nicely. But, even after a new sensor and new wiring, my dummy coolant light still continues to light up, so I have no idea what's going on there, but it really bugs me. I'm positive it's not over heating, but still need to take it on a solid drive instead of just idling in the garage.

Any ideas on that light?

Getting it all installed and the plastic cooling fins installed, bled the system and made sure it was topped off with a good mix of distilled 50/50:

Everything bolted back up and ready to drive:

Nice work Mike. I can get the beetle out and we could make a run to park city and back.

Re solder connection on instrument cluster and replace voltage regulator while there.

The voltage stabilizer can cause the fuel and water gauge to go wonky. They're easy to replace and if I remember you can just grab a 12v regulator from radioshack. I've seen the culprit be the solder on the pin at the plug on the cluster too. When you hit a bump the resistance goes high for a sec and the red light starts up.
