Feeler: 03 jetta GLI 2.8L V6 24v

Post by chaltig »

My buddy has suffered a series of unfortunate events, resulting in the motor of his GLI being burnt out :banghead: , and is looking to sell it as is as a parts car or for some one looking to get the car back into working order. It has the 2.8L V6 24v. 6 speed manual transmission. 117,000 miles. The body and interior are straight and clean. Leather interior with no rips or tears. black on black. will include a set of winter tires and spare set of wheels, and roof racks.

I think that condition that the car is in, even though the motor is shot, it is worth around $3,500, but not 100%. Wondering what your fellas thoughts are and if there are any nibbles.

Doesn't sound like a bad price to me....new motor on the cheap or even a decent build, could have a solid gli for 4500 - 6500 depending. How's the transmission?

The transmission in good condition. If I remember correctly the clutch and slave cylinder were replaced at around 100k.

I have a picture I can post. But long story short my friend lent his car to a buddy so he could do some errands and some time during his errands he either bottomed out or ran it into a curb cracking the oil pan. He then continued to drive it while the oil light was on and check engine light until the car finally ran out of oil and died with smoke pouring out of the intake. Mess of a situation cause the guy is denying that he bottomed out.

I saved a GLS 12V VR6 that had the same thing happen to it. Still have the long block in my garage too. So, to the right person it's very savable, but I think your buddy is going to have to ask a bit less to get it sold.

Realistically, it's damn near impossible to find a decent VR6 in Montana, and a 24V at that. I was very lucky to find a 12V in a local junkyard, and I paid more for the motor than I paid for the car.

After it's repaired, it would be a nice ride. Obviously the bottom end is toast. Any idea if the top end is OK? Posting quality pictures would be helpful if he wants to sell it.

Yeah a 24v seems to be quite the rare motor. I'm not totally sure about the top end though. What is a reasonable asking price?

Here is one picture, will post more

Since we know the motor is shot (brutally obvious from oil pan pic), a perspective buyer will want really good interior pics and body shots. Maybe worth a grand if its minty clean?
