School me on TDI MK4 - Looking to purchase

I would go with an 04-05 just so you can get the BEW engine. It makes more power than an alh stock, and will make a lot more power from a simple tune. A stage 2 bew with just a tune will make 140 hp. On an alh you can only make 110hp with only a tune and no engine mods.

Going to look at with intention of purchasing this guy.

It's spent all its life in texas. no wrecks, clean vin check, not molested inside. leather, moonroof. 197k.
Two issues with the car. 1) scrape/cut in the ps front bumper cover/trim right by the marker light. Looks like someone scraped a wall or car when backing out because they cranked the wheel too soon.
2) abs light is blinking. not sure what this is about. sales guy at the dealer isnt a car guy at all.
crossing fingers that it pans out.

With that fender I'd say it was in a wreck of some sort. Do they have a service log for it?

Well I ended up picking this one up. A few things wrong that will need addressing. Airbag light is on, ASR light is on, needs a windshield, fix the bumper, do a timing belt job, de-carbon the intake, and adjust the shifter. It's got a short throw kit on it from dieselgeeks and its not adjusted quite right. Also has a burly ass skid plate. Is that stock? looks like about 1/4" aluminum thats been shaped in a brake.
Overall though, I think this will polish up nicely. I only had one full tank on the trip and got 40mpg with it on cruise at 75mph.

Good buy! Score on the DG parts - the skid plate is probably dieselgeek as well.
Grab VCDS, clear the codes from each module and address what comes back. There's bound to be quite a few stored and active codes.
Airbag could be the connector under the seat (there's a TSB, or viewtopic.php?f=55&t=3374).
ASR could be sensors.

Re: School me on TDI MK4 - Looking to purchase
hey thanks. I'm pretty stoked. Coming from my rolled, beat to sh*t, 2wd nissan pickup this is a huge upgrade for me.
This VCDS, looks like there's a couple different license options. To view and clear codes will I be needing the free or the expensive option
?
Ordered up the timing belt kit and the metal nerd tools. Gosh, if I'd known DG was in san antonio I would have picked them up there. That's where I got the car from. <face palm>

Ah ha! I've found tdiclub.com. and they have a sticky. Looks like http://store.ross-tech.com/shop/VCKII.html this product is the correct item. Eek 250$ Time to browse the FS section and see if I can find a previously owned version.

http://www.myturbodiesel.com is also a good site, but doesn't have nearly as many users as TDIClub.kevin286 wrote:Ah ha! I've found tdiclub.com. and they have a sticky. I have VCDS if you happen to be near Helena someday.

Are you in missoula? I am in Hamilton. Have you ever done a TDI ALH timing belt job?
Thanks,
Chris
