Coolant leak Progress

Post by Manwithouthat »

Alright guys and girls, received my ECS "crack pipe" replacement kit today. Felt like we all do when we come home to find a beautiful cardboard box full of joy and metal/plastic/rubber. Haha Clearly my room mate is as excited as I was.

Anywho, got the crack pipe, thermostat housing, and flanges out. Turns out all the parts were new looking with good o-rings.

The bolts on the thermostat housing were so loose that I could almost turn them with my fingers. And the crack pipe had a lot of build up on the end that goes into the engine.

Oh well, I now have new parts and a billet crack pipe and some spare parts.
Got to drain out the rest of that nasty Green coolant they the previous owner had added. Tomorrow on my birthday I will be installing the new parts. I'll be posting more pics of the new billet installed. And will let you guys know if I'm still leaking! I think I'll be testing it with some water instead of G12 like last time haha
Don't worry though... I have my G12 and distilled water mixed up and ready to be put in after the leak is fixed for sure.

I love how easy it is to pull the radiator and supports on the Corrados! Such a breeze!

I could be just totally making this up but g12 and g12++ are different coolants right? I would assume the ++ is backwards compatible with g12 but I would make sure first. The g12 is phosphorus (I thinks is phosphorus) free because there was a problem with the green corroding the head gaskets. Also make sure you flush it good with water or it will turn nasty brown!

Yeah make sure you flush all the nasty stuff out for . I just did this in my b3 last summer. Now my new thermostat is sticking, gotta come apart again.

Hm. Not a bad price, if you need to replace it, it's worth the upgrade. Go Eurowise!

So I managed to break off a thermostat housing bolt in the motor head. I didn't have a drill so I ran to Lowe's and picked up a really nice DeWalt drill that came with 2 lithium ion batteries. Swung by ACE, grabbed a spiral screw extractor set, left-handed drill bit set and went to work.

Luckily Wes (SweaterVest) was able to round up an OEM bolt from within his VR6 treasure chest. I owe this man so much right now! Thanks again my friend! I finished installing the coolant pipe and thermostat housing. Oh and I forgot to mention that I did notice some rusty bits around the hole where the crack pipe goes into the head. So I grabbed some 600 grit sandpaper I had and gave it a quick rub to smooth it out.

Unfortunately I had to go to work. I got out of work around 10pm and went back at it.

I flushed the coolant system with a few gallons of distilled water. Installed the radiator and hooked up all the coolant hoses. Mixed all my Pentofrost++ and my distilled water and filled her up.

Tomorrow morning I'll fire up the engine, courtesy of the G60 and some jumper cables, and get the air bubbles worked out of the system.

Then all I have to do is reinstall the radiator support/grill and the headlights and I'll be good to drive around the block. Whoop whoop!
