Factory or not looking at the diagram it appears to be necessary, only this time the wire are being terminated with a solder splice. I'm working on it right now
Not sure what the status is on this project, I just read up on it. One thing I noticed was earlier you stated "black wire - ground obviously" or something like that. Germans use Brown as thier ground, but they refer to it as "earth" hence the brown color. Not sure if you had figured it out yet, but I thought I would throw it out there. I have dabbled in 12 v stuff for about 20 years, and I know a ground on the wrong wire can play havoc with a circuit and your mental health.

I have put this project on hold for now and been focusing on my other mk2. Did a headliner, built a battery box and am in the process of deleting the rear seat and building a floor.
The bad news is that my alternator keeps failing. I did an a/c delete awhile ago and found a non-ac alt. pulley from an aftermarket dealer on forums. I've been having charging issues for too long now and I'm on my third alternator (this one is on a lifetime warranty). Installed the alt. a week ago and have been checking it every morning since. I've noticed a slight drop in voltage each day but would still hold steady above 12v but today it stopped charging completely and left me stranded at the hardware store (fuck). So all i can think of is to charge the battery overnight, every night , cause i don't know why the hell this is happening and its driving me crazy.
Right on, Benno Jumped the exciter wire this morning and the alt. kicked on. Not sure why it's intermittent , but i do know that the batt. warning light on the cluster does not work… wonder if this could explain why the temp gauge doesn't work either, ha, the temp gauge will work the key in accessory and not when the ignition is on.
