2000 VW GTI VR6 Refresh...

Update: Got a package from the VW dealer that should of had a transmission output flange bolt, but they sent CV axle bolts instead. The single bolt in the middle of the flange was stripped when I had to remove it (passenger side) Luckily it came out with not a huge fight. Was hoping to get it done today, but looks like I will have to wait till next week. Got the correct bolt on the way.

Mark 4 had a 24 valve vr6… interesting

This is a 12V, but yeah 2004.5+ MKIV GTI/Jetta has 24V. That's IIRC

So what is the engine in this project cause it looked like a 24 valve now i think it looks like r32 with the intake manifold

It's a 2000, so it's a 12V VR6, 2.8L. I was mistaken, and 2002.5-2005 were the years the 24V VR6 was in the GTI/Jetta.

.:R32 is a 24V VR6. Same block, bored and stroked to 3.2L.

Great motors, rock solid and will make you jizz in your pants from the sound of the exhaust on acceleration.

Yup 2000 12V VR6. If only it was an R32 motor....

Well more parts arrived today. New oil pan, pcv hose, coolant temp sensor, spark plugs, fuel filter, oil filter, upper coolant hard line and the auxiliary radiator hoses.


I installed all the new coolant pieces and the fresh PCV hose from the pump.


After double-checking that i was done with everything at the front of the engine, I bolted the front radiator support back on and aligned it. I marked with a sharpie around the bolts when I removed it, so alignment was very close, the hood latch fits better now than before.


Next I removed the oil pan. Here is the inside of the old one.

Quite a bit of grime on the inside of it, I also found the other remnants of the old timing chain guide. I cleaned the mating surfaces with a scraper, then brillo pad and solvent. I had leftover sealant from the timing chain covers and I had enough for the whole pan.

Here is the new pan installed. Fresh Oil and Filter.


This wraps up this evening's project. Tommorow I will gap and install the new plugs, repaint the plastic engine cover, and install wires. The only thing left will be the pass. side cv output flange bolt that is on it's way. One more week I'm guessing and it will be done.

Gotcha… the intake manifold was throwing me off cause it looks different than the vr6 in my b4 passat

Installed new ngk platinum spark plugs and painted my engine cover. Got everything re-installed, It is soooo close now!

And Installed with new plugs, the wires were replaced about 3000 mi ago, so I cleaned them up and re used them.

I decided on the new oil pan because the old one had been repaired with what looks like the putty cement you can buy at the auto store.You can see where it had taken a heavy hit or two. It has been slowly leaking from the patched areas so I decided to replace it also.
